Oh for Pete's sake, it's not Pedro.
I will be the first to admit I have absolutely no idea what the Astros will be announcing at 9:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday. I have a few ideas, completely unconfirmed and not at all player-related. But I can assure you the Astros are not announcing they're signing Pedro Martinez.
A report on the Baseball Prospectus web site suggests otherwise. That report says the Astros are close to an agreement with Martinez.
This is absurd. This is actually one step beyond absurd but it's too late in the evening and I'm too tired to think of what that word is.
Here is what Ed Wade said:
"We have had zero conversations with Pedro. I have absolutely no idea where that is coming from."
I really wish I knew what the announcement was, but I don't. Talk to you at 9:45.

hahah excitement, no less.

alyson,
most of your readers understand that Ed Wade lies to your face and he doesn't want you blabbing their goings on to the public. they also know that after your pudge debacle and meltdown on 1560 yesterday morning, your credibility has been reduced to nil.
how are you still in denial about all this and when will you learn? it's like watching a trainwreck.
i'd still bet heavily on the pedro rumor being true...i'm just wondering how you still have the gall to so positively and flippantly say it isn't at this point?

A late mayor of New Orleans, Vic Schiro, once said "don't believe any false rumors unless you hear them from me." We'll have to wait and see.

Alyson is in good standing with Wade and he never lied to her about Pudge.
Boras came down to the Astros price range.
Pedro will not do that.
Pedro wants at least $6+million and that is not coming from us.

smahslah, go away.

signing pudge for a million five was the right price for mclane to open up his check book, and not drastically increase the payroll. i dont see him doing that for pedro, if pedro wont take anything less than 6 million.
i think this press conference is going to be about someone getting fired, hopefully sean berry, and a new hitting coach being announced.
i see no reason for mclane to fly to florida to announce a new player. he leaves that stuff to wade.

9:45 AM ? Nothing good ever happens before noon.

Anyone thought of asking Oswalt if he's met any new teammates today?

the press conference will not be about pedro, but he will be signed soon.
why go away ktex? i was just giving my opinion like the rest of you.
if she's making these bold claims, and she's wrong about them, there needs to be some accountability. i can assure you you'd be disgusted if you heard her on the radio yesterday morning slamming the national media and accusing them of lying and drumming up unfounded pudge rumors, only to have egg all over her face a few hours later.

Ticket prices and consessions going to be slashed?
I have to agree with the previous poster. How can you be a 100% about anything they tell you after Pudge? Not that I can blame you. You trust them so you go off what they tell you but you should reconsider the reliability of the information the club gives you.
I don't think its about Pedro either but just some food for thought.
Question:
You are given complete freedom to write what you want right? Given that you are part of the club. (blog/team website)

So I'm checking ESPN and see an article about the Pudge signing: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/notebook?page=bbtn
Interesting thing in there is that Steve Philips talks about Mark Mulder like he will be pitching to Pudge this season or AKA for the Astros. could the announcement tomorrow be about the signing of Mulder?

that espn article is interesting. hard to believe its some kind of misprint.

I think Philips goofed. If he had something why wouldn't he be trying to get credit for the scoop.
---
the pudge conversation starts 12 minutes over at about 19 minutes
paraphrasing:
they have a problem with steroids
too much money
all excited about what boras says but they never ask the other side (astros)
hyeman is wrong
someone else is wrong
get played by boras, (carlos beltran screwed them)
john and lance agree with no pudge
she admits in mid-january they did talk pudge
alyson says people wont come see pudge. wrong i will. maybe not tons of people put some will. including the hispanic population.

I just talked to Steve Phillips -- it was a mistake and they're fixing it...he meant Moehler, not Mulder.
I don't want to keep belaboring on this Pudge thing, but I do stand by what I said, and what I said on the radio about the national media that didn't have the story even when they said they had the story. There are reporters who are there to get the word out on behalf of the agent, whether there's any truth to it or not. It's been going on since the beginning of time and will continue on. I sense there will be much more that comes out about the timeline between last Friday and the past Monday. I can assure you when I spoke with Ed Wade last Friday there were no negotiations with Pudge. Over the weekend, that changed. I can't say more than that and like I said in my earlier post, I totally understand how this looks, and it looks awful. It makes all of us look bad -- Ed, myself and other reporters who were also definitively stating there was no deal with Pudge in the works. I know what I know, but wow, if I was on the other side of this, reading it from the outside from a fan's perspective, I wouldn't believe me either. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I'm up worrying about what this press conference is. My alarm is going to go off in five hours and I'm wide awake with visions of Pedro Martinez walking into the room tomorrow with Drayton McLane dancing in my head.
I kid. Pedro's not coming.

moehler makes a lot more sense. if the astros were going to take a chance on a pitcher coming back from injuries, i would rather it be sheets.
since you're awake alyson, like me, at least you can enjoy the japan/korea game.

You should at least get Ed to make it up to you for going 180 like that.

I believe you, because really why would you lie? I know you may omit things at times to keep good relations with the people you have to interview, but hey thats part of the business. I also believe Wade at certain times wasn't interested in Pudge at 3 million, he isn't worth it for the Astros at the much.
Smahslah I think you are being kind of an *** about all of this, if you don't agree fine, but you are the being flippant by essentially accusing Alyson of lying on her blog. From what I can tell, she made guesses and predictions not 'claims'. Thats not about accountability, its about guessing, so if she guesses Ortiz is the 5th man in the rotation and it ends up being Cappellan are you going to come and call her a liar?

Being so flippant isn't really necessary. The Front Office played you once; they'll play you again. No big deal, but absolutes probably aren't going to help anybody. By the way, I'm listening to that 1560 podcast and it's just clunky. Those guys are morons and you really didn't prepare at all.
Report any abuse or spam
smahslah, are you being serious? As if you have some inside track on the goings on inside the Astros organization that the freaking beat writer doesn't? You say her claims are wild, and yet you turn right around and claim, without ANY basis in logic or fact whatsoever, that she's not trusted by Wade or some such nonsense? You goofy, astoundingly spastic moron, please go let a truck run you over and rid us all of your shocking stupidity. If not that, at LEAST take a basic English course and learn about capitalization. Or maybe you're TRYING to look like a complete and utter fool?

i'm done posting on this blog, but i certainly never called HER a liar. it just seems like she was kept in the dark intentionally (surely to some degree) about the organization's level of interest in pudge. they didn't switch on a dime from not wanting anything to do with the guy to signing him. there was obviously more going on behind the scenes throughout the days and weeks than she was led to believe.
also, she bashed the national media from presenting their findings as fact despite getting their scoop from only one of the sides, yet she did the exact same thing. she bet on the astros general manager, they bet on either boras, pudge, or who knows what other sources. their side was right, and hers was wrong.

Lay off Alyson.....first of all, she doesn't work for the Astros! She only beat-writes for them. She is employed by MLB.COM! And personally, although this "May" girl on the MLB network is very attractive, shes not as pretty as Alyson and Alyson is much more knowlegable in baseball that she is and Alyson should take her job! P.S. Alyson? Can I have that date now?

Lighten up guys! Alyson made a mistake & apologized for it. I accept the apology.
Alyson - Thank you so much for the wonderful blog Alyson. I especially enjoyed the pictures. I have followed this team since 1962 & it has been quite a ride. These young people in Houston think it is bad the Astros have missed the playoffs 3 years in a row. This team did not make the playoffs until their 19th season & did not win a playoff series, much less advance to the World Series, until their 43rd season. Of course I love when they are winning, but a mid market team simply is not going to win every year.
Keep up the good work Ms. Footer.

I'm sure worst things have happened in reporting on baseball. And how often have trades and signings formulated overnight? Plenty of times, more than not, teams may be thinking about particular guys in mind to fill holes they feel they have, but I'm sure to keep negotiating from getting out of hand, you move in quickly to strike the deal. If it takes weeks to come to fruition, obviously it's a huge signing/trade with a lot of $$ involved. Ed Wade obviously likes keeping these things in his pocket until it's time to put them on the table. The next deal I hope they announce is his firing and Hunnsicker's return.
